About NVS

The Norwegian vegan Society (NVS) was established on 16th December 2009 and is a nationwide and democratic organisation which aims to bring together all those who are practising vegans or wish to become vegan, in Norway. The organisation promotes veganism as an ethical way of living, done out of consideration for all humans, animals and the environment, and bases its ideology in the original definition of the Vegan Society from 1944:

The word «veganism» denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

What is Veganism?

Veganism is based on non-violence and respect for life, and distances itself from oppression of all creatures. Vegans therefore, do not hurt or misuse animals. Veganism is based on ethics and is the natural and logical implementation of vegetarianism.
The word “veganism” was first used in 1944 by Donald Watson, and coincided with the establishment of the British Vegan Society. It describes a way of living where one denies, as much as possible, the mistreatment of animals for food, clothing and all other purposes.
With regard to food, veganism means abstaining from the consumption of meat, fish, eggs, milk and honey. On the subject of clothing, vegans refuse to wear fur, leather, wool, down and silk. In all other areas, veganism involves using resources and products which do not involve violence towards and/or the capture of animals.

Why vegan?

For animals:
We do not eat those whom we respect. To be vegan means that you do not contribute to the capturing and killing of animals. Calves will not be separated from their mothers, and hens will not be gassed for their flesh. Sheep will not be held in pens and mistreated for the production of clothes. All suffering is unnecessary. If we really believe that animals are worthy in their own right, we should not support ourselves at their expense as long as we have vegan alternatives.

For the planet:
Plant based farming is more in balance with nature than livestock farming. According to UAO (UN’s plant and agricultural farming organisation) the livestock sector is one of the world’s biggest contributors to local and global environmental problems. Plant based food production does not only save the lives of animals, but requires less use of land area, water and energy, and is less damaging to vegetables. To be vegan means you place less ecological pressures on the planet. The change to a vegan diet will make it easier to feed the world’s expanding populations.

For your health:
To change over to a balanced and varied vegan diet is among one of the healthiest dietary decisions you can make: lots of fruit and green vegetables, vitamins and antioxidants, few saturated fats ad adequate amounts of proteins, calcium and minerals. All the nutrition requirements are covered in a plant based diet. It is well documented that vegetarian diets can prevent a whole list of health problems, including cardiovascular problems, obesity and several types of cancer.
